Michael Mahoney is a Painter who has deep family roots in the Rocky Mountain West. His father’s great-grandfather was an Irish stone carver who helped build the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver CO. His mother’s grandfather was a friend of Buffalo Bill Cody. His Grandfather is in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame, and his Mother was Miss Frontier. Michael’s parents moved from Wyoming to Montana where he was born in 1959. Growing up he spent much of his time fishing, hiking and painting in the Absoraka-Beartooth Wilderness North of Yellowstone Park.
Art was always a big part of Michael’s life. He was a gifted drawer at a very early age. His love of art and experience in the outdoors of Montana led him to work for many years as a Natural Illustrator. He created hundreds of complex wildlife and habitiat paintings for clients like; the U.S. Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy, Trout Unlimited, Montana Fish and Game, and many others. Michael has also gained international recognition for his detailed paintings of fish. Jim Merritt wrote a feature article about Michael that ran in ‘Field and Stream’ magazine. The 3-page article was titled ‘The Masters Hand’. He also painted for TV audiences as a guest on the ESPN program ‘On the Fly’.
While Michael worked as a natural and historic painter he was also perfecting an impressionist painting style that might allow him to further explore the majestic icons of the American West. He developed a style that is uniquely his own.
The movement and energy in one of Michael’s paintings is engaging to the viewer for a long period of time. Many owners of Michael’s work claim that the paintings unfold themselves slowly. Different angles and different lighting reveal new subtleties over time. Perhaps the real beauty of his style is that it is a flowing vehicle for the emotional connection Michael has with the familiar subjects of the West.
Michael and his wife Pam continue to live in Montana. Michael paints Landscapes, Wildlife, and People with his thoughtful style of moving impressionism.
